Garden Update

Week 4 and the corn is over my knees and almost at my hips. I am blown away at how things are taking off. I am however running behind of my maintenance though. I have to set up some runners for the Green beans that are taking off too. The Squash too is moving along, and the tomatoes need some support.

That said, I am excited as to what August will bring, with some possible veggies to harvest!!

Hey city boy. Next year take advantage of growing corn with running green beans planted beside it. That way, you will not have the chore of putting up a vine or tee pee for the beans to grow on.

The garden looks great. I can't wait to see what comes of it in the fall. I bet you get started earlier next year.

Now is the time to start looking at what you can plant in the fall around August in your area....things like scallions, cabbage, carrots, broccoli, radishes or peas. When growing peas, they do two things. They give you food and replace the nitrogen into the soil.

Don't forget about using composted manure in your garden. It releases slowly and is idea for plants as it is organic. A 40 pound bag is as cheap as dirt. ha ha

Another thing to extend the growing season is to have some little baby green houses over your plants to protect them from frost. Use some plastic with something to hold it up away from the plant. You know that after the first frost that you might not have another one for a while. Anyway, these covers will help keep the heat inside. Don't forget to ventilate so they can breathe. Of course, I am speaking of fall plants.

I know you aren't planning to do this in the fall but you might think about it next year since you love good food so much. Hey, your rocking chair days are coming in about 50 years so, this is something to think about for the future.
